Buckhanon Named National, State, and Conference Player of the Week
Maya Buckhanon becomes the first Fisk weekly honor winner since 2014.
KANSAS CITY, Kansas, -- For the past two seasons, Fisk University Lady Bulldog center Maya Buckhanon has been on a mission to gain national attention for the university. Last season, she was named to the NAIA DI NAIA All-American Second Team. This week, she became the first Fisk player to receive National Player of the Week honors since January 2014 when Cam Lewis was honored. While Buckhanon is thrilled to be recognized, she has bigger things in mind.
"This is huge individually, but I want a championship," said Buckhanon. We as a team stand on business. An individual award is never just about the person. My teammates and coaches deserve this honor too. I couldn't do this by myself.
Buchanon was aggressive on both ends of the floor. On the offensive end, she averaged 19 shots per game, averaging 26.5 points. Against NCAA DI North Alabama, she scored 29 points and grabbed 11 boards. In the victory over Wiley, the Talladega, Alabama native scored 26 points and grabbed 23 rebounds. She followed that up with a 27-point, 15-rebound effort against Philander Smith.
Buckhanon also showcased her dominance in the paint on the defensive end, blocking six shots for the week, three coming against Philander. She has now recorded double-doubles in eight of her nine games this season and her second game with at least 20 points and 20 rebounds.
After defeating Talladega College on the road on Monday, the Lady Bulldogs evened up their overall record at 6-6, 4-1 in the GCAC. On Monday, she was named the Gulf Coast Conference Player of the Week for the second week in a row and three out of the past four weeks. Today, she was also named the Tennessee Sports Writers' Association Player of the Week for the second time this season.
"She works hard, and this is well deserved," said Fisk Head Coach Victoria Crawford. This means a lot to Fisk and to the GCAC. Maya has made it clear that she wants the team to win. We are happy for her but we know we still have work to do."
