Defense Leads Dawgs to Victory Over Dillard
Fisk only gives up 17 first half points and cruises to victory.
NEW ORLEANS – If the saying, 'defense wins championships' is true, then Fisk University Bulldogs should make some damage in the postseason, as they held Dillard University Bleu Devils to 17 first half points enroute to a 55-47 road win. The victory gave Fisk a season sweep over Dillard for the first time since the 2013-14 season.
"It has been tough to play them especially here," said Fisk Head Coach Kenny Anderson. "Our top scorer was out so we had to play hard on the other end. I have liked our effort on defense lately. I hope we can keep that going."
Jayden Lockett led three Fisk players in double figures with 14 points. His defensive pressure allowed him to get six steals keeping Dillard at bay all night. All five of his second half steals led to points for the Dawgs.
"My goal at the beginning of the season was to win Defensive Player of the Year," said Lockett. "Steals and blocked shots help the team out. We struggled on the offensive end, so I put it on my shoulders. I like how we have been playing lately. We are getting it together at the right time."
With 4:25 left in regulation, Dillard cut the deficit to 45-40 on a three-point basket by Armond Williams. Lockett made two steals on consecutive possessions, one leading to a dunk by him, the other led to a fast break layup by Rodney Wiley to give Fisk breathing room. Dillard was able to cut it to six in the final minute, but Tyon Thompson (11 points) and Wiley combined to go 4-of-4 from the free throw line to put the game away.
In February, Fisk only allowed one team (Talladega) to score over 60 points on them. They are giving 52 points per game during the stretch. The victory evened their overall record for the second time this season.
