Armstead Honored at City Council Meeting
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Last week, Fisk University sophomore Jeremiah Armstead, spent his spring break in Long Beah, California. While there, he was able to reconnect with family members and friends. The 6'5 forward who was recently named the 2024 Perry Wallace Courage Award winner by the United States Basketball Writers Association, was also honored by the Long Beach City Council.
"I was glad to come back home but to also get honored was amazing too," said Armstead. "Having my family with me was great too. I appreciate the love that people have been showing me."
Armstead, who was recognized by the Washington Post last season, was homeless for much of his high school career. He came to Fisk last year and has competed in basketball. His story has afforded him notoriety.
Fisk alum Steven Bernstein, who runs a non-profit called We Educate Brilliant Minds, brought Armstead to Fisk's attention. His group and other non-profits were the catalysts to get Armstead on campus, something that he never thought would happen.
"I prayed to God everyday about going to college. When Mr. Bernstein contacted me, I couldn't believe that my prayers were answered. I just want to be able to help my family get in a better situation. All the notoriety has helped. Hopefully I can be an example for other kids like me that your dreams can come true."
