Hot Shooting Dawgs Triumph Over Voorhees
14 three-pointers made give Fisk a huge lift in road division win.
DENMARK, S.C. - The Fisk University Bulldogs secured a decisive victory over Voorhees University with a final score of 84-67. Leading the charge were Justin McNelkan, who delivered an impressive 23 points, and Doyel Cockrill III, who contributed 21 points in the triumph.
The game began with a strong start from Fisk, as McNelkan and Lucious Jackson opened the match with consecutive three-pointers. Throughout the game, Fisk demonstrated formidable accuracy from behind the arc, hitting 14 three-point shots and maintaining a 42 percent success rate from long range.
A pivotal moment occurred with the game tied at 17 and 11:06 left in the first half. Fisk embarked on an 8-0 run, seizing the momentum and never relinquishing it. With 5:31 remaining in the game, McNelkan sank two free throws to extend Fisk's lead to its largest margin of 21 points. Despite their efforts, Voorhees University could not reduce the deficit to less than 15 points for the rest of the game.
Michael Ashley and Mitch Seay played crucial roles in the second half, especially after both went scoreless in the first half. Ashley, scoring 12 points, and Seay, contributing ten points, combined for a total of 22 points in the second half, showcasing exceptional efficiency with a combined 9-of-11 shooting performance from the field.
This victory highlights the Bulldogs' depth and resilience, setting a positive tone for their future matchups.
"When we shoot like that, we are tough to beat," said Fisk head coach Jeremiah Crutcher. "Justin has been on fire the last three games. Teams have been keying on Doyel, but they seem to forget about Justin, Luke, Mike, and Kailon (Benton-Hamilton). We needed this one. Now we have a little bit of a break to fine tune some things and get some guys healthy. We have four games left before the tournament. We must focus on the task at hand."
The Bulldogs will be off until they travel to Ohio to take on Wilberforce University on February 6.
