Freshman Golfer Starks Named to the All-Tournament Team
MEMPHIS – This past Sunday, Fisk University Freshman Golfer Donovan Starks was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Lemoyne Owen University Golf Tournament in Memphis. Starks shot a 91 the first day then followed up with an 87 the next, earning the best two rounds of any Fisk golfer to propel the team to a third-place finish.
Starks, a native of Los Angeles, California, had to deal with winds as high as 50 miles per hour during the weekend. The weather conditions were something that he had ever experienced.
"This was the first time playing in weather that was this cold and windy," said Starks. "Coach (Robert) Moore told us to take notes and switch clubs during the practice rounds. I had to throw the notes away once we got started because the conditions changed. Although the scores weren't as good as I would like them to be, I am happy with my finish. I was in the group with the golfer that won the tournament. He is used to the wind."
Moore also was happy about the way Starks battled during the tournament. He believes that Starks' best scores will come. Starks just got on campus in the second semester, so Moore is just getting a chance to work with him. He is excited about the potential of his freshman.
"To be honest, he could have won the tournament if the weather was better," said Moore. "He adjusted on the fly and listened. That young man is very talented. He told me his hands were numb because of the cold but was confident when he started to warm up. Sky's the limit for him."
