Bulldog Track Teams Prepare for Rhodes College 7-Way Meet
MEMPHIS – The Fisk University Bulldog Track Teams have dedicated themselves throughout the season in preparation for the HBCU Athletic Conference Championships. Following a strong performance at the Morehouse Relays last week, the teams are now set to travel west along I-40 to compete in the Rhodes College 7-Way Meet in Memphis.
Coach's Perspective
"We are young, so I want to see how we stack up against stiff competition," said Fisk head coach Marcelle Scales. "This meet is traditionally one of the top ones in Tennessee. I am interested in seeing the progress we made."
Women's Team Highlights
Two Lady Bulldogs received conference honors this week. Graduate student Jackie Bownes placed second in the shot put, breaking her own school record for the third time this year with a throw of 13.09 meters. Although she narrowly missed qualifying for nationals, Bownes is currently ranked fifteenth in the nation and was named the HBCUAC Field Athlete of the Week. Freshman Ari Branch, who recently concluded a successful basketball season and was named conference Freshman of the Year, earned Freshman of the Week honors after finishing fourth in the long jump and setting a personal best in the 200-meter dash. Freshman thrower Symora Prince continues to show promise for the team, having set a school record in the Hammer Throw.
Men's Team Progress
The men's team is making steady progress. Freshmen Mgdie Ali and Chris Washington will return to their hometown for the meet. Thrower Jerome Malone is strengthening his performance each week, aiming to make a significant impact as the conference competitions begin.
