Double-Doubles from Buckhanon and Bibbs Propel Lady Dawgs to Victory
January 10, 2024
NASHVILLE- Maya Buckhanon scored 15 of her 23 points in the second half to lead four Lady Bulldogs in double figures as the Fisk defeated the Oakwood University Lady Ambassadors 68-49 in Gulf Coast Athletic Conference action from Nashville.
The Lady Bulldogs (9-6, 6-1 GCAC) once again dominated on the glass, outrebounding Oakwood 56-35. Jayla Bibbs, who scored 11 points, had a game-high 17 rebounds, and Buckhanon and De'Lesia Scott added 11 apiece.
Buckhanon earned her 12th double-double in 13 games played. Bibbs' effort raised her rebounding per game to 10.3. She now has ten games with double-figure rebounds and six double-doubles on the season.
"We missed a lot of layups and we still are turning the ball over too much," said Lady Bulldog Head Coach Victoria Crawford. "I liked our effort on the defensive end but we still have some things to clean up. They came back on us at the start of the third quarter but we were able to hold them off. We need to play better if we want to do well in the postseason."
Zipporah Davis added 13 points and Laila Eliotti chipped in with 12 to round out the Lady Bulldogs in double figures.
FIRST QUARTER 18-6 Fisk | Lady Dawgs Start Fast
It looked like Fisk would run away and hide from Oakwood as they started the game by scoring 14 of the first 16 points. All five starters and Scott off the bench scored in the quarter, giving Crawford the balanced attack that she has been looking for all season.
SECOND QUARTER 18-12 Oakwood | Lady Ambassadors Close The Gap Before The Half
Oakwood started the quarter scoring the first eight points before Davis scored to break the Fisk drought. After the Lady Bulldogs stretched the lead back to 11, Oakwood went on a 5-0 run to drop the Fisk lead to six. Eliotti's three-point basket and another basket in the lane gave Fisk a ten-point lead. A buzzer beater by Oakwood's Jakyla Diawara gave the Lady Ambassadors momentum going into the half.
THIRD QUARTER 19-12 Fisk | Lady Dawgs Start Slow But Go on a 17-2 Run to Take Control of the Game
The Diawara basket gave Oakwood life as they came out of the locker on fire, going on a 10-2 run to tie it at 32. Fisk woke up and scored 17 of the next 19 points of the quarter to take control back of the game. Once again it was a balanced attack during the run as four Lady Bulldogs combined on the 17 points.
FOURTH QUARTER 19-15 Fisk | Lady Dawgs Cruise to the Finish Line
The Lady Bulldogs stretch the lead to 27 on a Buckhanon basket on an assist from Davis. Oakwood shaved eight points off the lead but couldn't get any closer.
The Lady Bulldogs continue their homestand with a game with Dillard University on Friday.
