Lady Dawgs Win Eighth Straight with Weekend Sweep of New Orleans Teams
NASHVILLE—The Fisk University Lady Bulldogs (11-6, 8-1 GCAC) received huge games from several players as they beat Dillard University and Southern University of New Orleans on Friday and Saturday. The victories were their fifth in a row and their eighth straight against Gulf Coast Athletic Conference teams.
"We are playing much better, but I keep stressing that we have to protect the ball better," said Head Coach Victoria Crawford after watching her team commit 53 turnovers in the two games combined. We won't be able to win too many games if this keeps happening. We have some work to do. We are 8-1 in conference play, but now we will be playing teams for the second time. We will have to make some adjustments."
On Friday, four Fisk players scored in double figures, with three recording double-doubles as the Lady Bulldogs held on to defeat Dillard 76-72. Fisk ran out to an early 17-7 lead at the end of the first quarter, then padded the lead to 39-25 at the half.
In the third quarter, Fisk built the lead to 20 at 45-25 on a rebound and basket by A'Niya Young (16 points and 19 rebounds) at the 7:45 mark. Dillard went on a 12-2 run to get back in the game. A basket by Taylor Wynter of Dillard cut the Fisk lead to 50-48. Zipporah Davis (16 points) was fouled on a three-point shot and made all three free throws with five seconds left to give the Lady Dawgs a five-point lead.
With Fisk up by four points to start the fourth quarter, Dillard clawed back and took a three-point lead going on an 11-4 run. Fisk tied the score when Davis split two free throws and Young grabbed her 18th rebound and scored a layup with 3:23 left. Dillard scored the next three points, but Young converted on another rebound and putback to cut the lead to one.
Buckhanon scored five points to give her team a 68-64 lead with 43 seconds left. Dillard cut the lead to one, but three Buckhanon free throws sealed the game for Fisk. Jayla Bibbs had the third double-double scoring ten points and grabbing ten rebounds.
