Volley Dogs Travel to Stillman for HBCUAC Match
Fisk looks to keep perfect conference record with road game.
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (October 3, 2024) – As the season gets into its final stretch, the Fisk University Lady Bulldog volleyball team will look to go 8-0 in conference play when they take on the Stillman College Tigers (5-11, 4-3 HBCUAC) in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. In the first match-up, Fisk (14-12, 7-0 HBCUAC) swept (25-20. 25-21, and 25-7). The match was closer than the score indicated, as Fisk had to go on a 6-0 in the second set to take a commanding 2-0 lead.
Outside hitter Reagan Jones had a double-double of 11 game-high kills and a team-high 15 digs. Laila Esters chipped in ten kills, just missing a double-double with nine digs. Trinity Britt had 29 assists.
KEYS TO THE MATCH:
Playing on the road is always tough, and this will be the first time Fisk will play at Stillman. The Lady Bulldogs will need to lean on their strong front wall to bring energy on the defensive end. Sydney Willis had seven blocks the last time out against Freed-Hardeman. Jones and Britt will have to continue their strong connection on the pass and kill.
Fisk Sweeps HBCUAC Player of the Week Honors
Fisk swept the HBCU Athletic Conference's weekly volleyball honors for the second time this season. Coming off being named the Tennessee Sports Writers Association Player of the Week, Reagan Jones won the Attacker of the Week for the fifth time this season, her second in a row. The Franklin, Tennessee native posted 41 kills in 12 sets for an average of 3.42 per set. She slammed 17 against Philander Smith University. For the week, Jones hit at .309 and added seven service aces.
Nialah Gupton picked up her second Defender of the Week award with her previous win for August 12-18. She recorded four double-digit dig matches for a total of 55, an average of 4.58 per set. Gupton leads the HBCUAC with 351 digs. She successfully received 79 of 85 serves for a percentage of .924.
Trinity Britt won her sixth Setter of the Week award, averaging 11.22 assists per set. She surpassed 20 assists in two matches, with a high of 44 against Philander Smith on Saturday. Britt continues to lead the HBCUAC with 710 assists and 8.55 per set. The trio helped Fisk stay atop the HBCUAC standings.
Britt Earns 1,000th Assist
In only her second season, setter Trinity Britt earned her 1,000th assist in the game against Freed-Hardeman. The sophomore from Gainesville, Florida came into the season as the backup setter but stepped in to run Fisk's 5-1 offense after GCAC Freshman of the Year Nebthet Re suffered a season ending injury.
