Track & Golf Finish Spring Sports on a High Note
Strong Individual Performances Cap Off the 2026 Fisk Athletics Season.
Spring Sports Highlights: Track & Golf
Fisk Athletics wrapped up the 2026 season with outstanding individual performances, despite facing several ups and downs throughout the year. The season concluded this week, marking a high point for both the men's golf and track & field teams.
Men's Golf: Record-Breaking Performance
HOBBS, NM - The week began with an impressive showing from the men's golf team. Graduate student Henry "Hank" Baskin delivered a standout performance at the Continental Athletic Conference Tournament in Hobbs, New Mexico. Despite battling winds reaching up to 50 miles per hour, Baskin recorded a three-round score of 230, earning second place in the tournament. This achievement marks the best score by a Fisk golfer since joining the CAC.
Fisk head coach Robert Moore praised Baskin's consistency throughout the year, noting the challenging conditions: "Those winds were tough, but he fought through it. I am not shocked that he played well."
Baskin's accomplishments were recognized with First Team All-Conference honors.
Track & Field: Triumphs Amid Challenging Weather
SHREVEPORT, LA. - The track & field teams, led by Head Coach Marcelle Scales, also faced tough weather at the HBCU Athletic Conference's Track & Field Championships in Shreveport, Louisiana. Due to storms predicted in the area, the meet was rescheduled, with athletes competing under rainy conditions.
Graduate student Jackie Bownes delivered a remarkable performance, winning the Hammer, Discus, and Shot Put events. Her victories earned her the conference Field Most Valuable Athlete award. Bownes concluded her career as a four-time Discus champion and has won the Shot Put three out of the last four years, following a second-place finish in 2025. This season marked her debut in the Hammer, resulting in her first win in that event. Over her career, she has accumulated eight first-place finishes and one second-place finish.
Freshman Symora Prince took second place in the Discus, while classmate Ari Branch, who was named Freshman of the Year in basketball, finished second in the Long Jump. On the men's side, freshman Jerome Malone secured second place in the Hammer.
Coach Reflections and Team Outlook
Reflecting on the season, Coach Scales commented, "Jackie has been a steady force on the conference level. I am not surprised that she finished like this. We brought ten freshmen to the meet, so they will understand how to prepare for next season. I am happy about how we competed. We are building something special here."
