Lady Dawgs Hold on to Defeat SUNO
Dee Scott records her third straight double-double to lead Fisk to their third straight victory.
NEW ORLEANS - The Fisk University Lady Bulldogs women's basketball team continued their impressive run with a hard-fought 66-63 victory over Southern University of New Orleans (SUNO) in nonconference action. Marking their third consecutive road win, all against HBCU Athletic Conference opponents, the Lady Bulldogs showcased resilience and composure throughout the contest.
Fisk set the tone early, jumping out to a quick six-point lead before SUNO responded with a surge to end the first quarter ahead by three. The momentum stayed with SUNO into the second quarter as they extended their lead, heading into halftime up 34-27. Determined to shift the tide, Fisk leveraged their size advantage in the third quarter, relying on senior Dee Scott, who scored all eight points in an 8-2 run that fueled the Lady Bulldogs' comeback. Fisk dominated the third, outscoring SUNO 22-13 to take a narrow 49-47 lead into the final period.
With just under three minutes remaining, a clutch free throw by Teniya Williams gave Fisk its largest lead at 61-51. However, SUNO mounted a late rally, closing the gap to 64-63 on Jordan Harris's three-pointer with only 25 seconds left. Despite some struggles at the free-throw line in the closing seconds—converting just 2-of-8 attempts—the Lady Bulldogs managed to seal the win, with freshman Ari Branch hitting a crucial jump shot with nine seconds remaining to close the scoring.
"I am glad to get out of here with a win, but I don't like how we finished," said Fisk head coach Victoria Crawford. "Those missed free throws can't happen. Our primary ballhandlers can't go 0 for 6 in the final minute."
Scott earned her third consecutive double-double with 21 points and 15 rebounds. Kayla Lee contributed 17 points, 12 rebounds, five assists, and seven steals. Branch, after a 40-point game the last time out, also scored 17.
The Lady Bulldogs' will head to Louisville, Kentucky to face Simmons College on Tuesday.
