Bulldogs Sweep Two at Oakwood
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Fisk University Bulldogs went into a tough environment and came anyway with two wins as the Fisk Lady Bulldogs defeated the Oakwood University Lady Ambassadors 67-55 and the men's team survived in a 61-57 win.
Big Game from Bibbs Lead Give Lady Dawgs Win
Jayla Bibbs scored 18 points and Maya Buckhanon had a double-double of 14 points and 12 rebounds as the Fisk University Lady Bulldogs (13-7, 10-2 GCAC) defeated the Oakwood University Lady Ambassadors (6-13, 4-7 GCAC) 67-55 in Gulf Coast Athletic Conference play from Huntsville, Alabama.
The Lady Ambassadors controlled the first half but a 19-9 third quarter gave Fisk a lead that they kept the rest of the way. Bibbs also contributed four steals all in the decisive fourth quarter.
"We needed the defense to step up in the second half and it did," said Fisk Head Coach Victoria Crawford. "JB has been one of our best on ball defenders. Her pressure has given us easy baskets.
Zipporah Davis chipped in with 13 points including her best shooting day from behind the arc on the season going 3-for-6.
Goodman Carries Bulldogs to Tough Victory
Blake Goodman scored 23 points, Jayden Lockett added 13 and Michael Ashley contributed a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds in Fisk's 61-57 win over Oakwood (1-20, 1-11 GCAC). The Bulldogs (10-11, 7-5 GCAC) stretched the lead to 14 at 11:24 mark of the second half on a Lockett layup. Oakwood went to work and eventually cut the lead to 57-56 with 1:40 left.
Goodman, Lockett, and Rod Wiley combined to go 4-of-6 from the free throw line in the final minute to seal the win.
