HOLLY SPRINGS, Miss. - On Saturday, Fisk University's Bulldog basketball teams are set for an afternoon doubleheader against Rust College in the HBCU Athletic Conference East Division. The teams have navigated a season filled with both highs and lows, making this closing matchups especially significant as they aim to finish strong and gain momentum heading into the playoffs.
Lady Dawgs Look to Get Back to Their Winning Ways
After winning four games on the road, the Lady Bulldogs have dropped their last two, both at home. Rust brings a big challenge for Fisk. Rust's Patsy Johnson leads the conference in scoring and teammate Lauren Bennett has been an inside force for the Lady Bearcats. Fisk counters with sophomore sensation Kayla Lee. This week, Lee became the first player in history to win both the National Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week honors in the same week in the NAIA. Lee also accomplished the prestigious 5-by-5 last Saturday against Oakwood University, racking up 28 points, 12 rebounds, 11 assists, seven blocks, and five steals.
Freshman Ari Branch has emerged as the Robin to Lee's Batman, earning Freshman of the Week for the eighth consecutive week this season. Senior Dee Scott has also stepped up recently, posting double doubles in four of her last six games. With Lee, Branch, and Scott performing at such a high level, the Lady Dawgs are determined to finish strong as they prepare for a pivotal matchup against Rust College and look to build momentum heading into postseason play.
Dawgs Look to Finish Strong in Final Regular Season Game
The Fisk Bulldogs head into their final regular season game riding a three-game winning streak, fueled by a high-powered offense that has consistently kept them atop the scoring charts. Saturday's matchup could see head coach Jeremiah Crutcher achieve his longest winning streak since arriving at Fisk, adding extra motivation for the Bulldogs as they chase history. Freshman Kaleb Jeffries, recently named HBCUAC Freshman of the Week, tied a school record for three-pointers made and joins Nicholas Beaird-Kennard among the conference leaders in that category. Both Jeffries and Andrew Ford bring a Memphis connection to this game. The Memphis natives grew up 30 minutes away from Rust. With a win, Fisk will secure sole possession of fourth place in the HBCUAC East Division, boosting their momentum for postseason play.
